Wet Season Home Maintenance Checklist for Darwin Homes
The Top End’s wet season is tough on homes. Humidity, monsoonal downpours, storms and cyclone season (officially 1 November to 30 April) turn small maintenance problems into expensive ones quickly. A few hours of preparation before the heavy rain arrives can save a lot of money and stress.
Start with the roof and gutters
Look for lifted or loose roof sheets, rusty or loose fixings, damaged flashings and blocked gutters and downpipes. Water that cannot escape will find its way inside. If you are not comfortable working at heights, do not risk it. A professional roof repair inspection is far cheaper than a ceiling replacement.
Check doors, windows and flyscreens
Humidity makes timber swell, so doors that stick or will not latch are common at this time of year. Sliding tracks clog with dirt and corrode. Planing or adjusting a sticking door, realigning tracks and replacing worn seals and torn flyscreens now keeps your home secure and comfortable. Our door installation and repair team handles these jobs every wet season.
Look for moisture in walls and ceilings
Water stains, bubbling paint, musty smells and soft or sagging plasterboard are all warning signs. Find and fix the source of the moisture first, then repair the damage with plastering and mould-resistant paint. Good ventilation helps stop mould coming back.
Secure fences, gates and outdoor timber
Strong wind and saturated ground quickly expose leaning posts, rotted rails and sagging gates. Check posts for rot or termite damage, tighten loose fixings and realign gates. Our fence repair team can sort out anything that needs more than a quick fix.
Sheds, carports and pergolas
Check that structures are properly fixed down, that there are no loose sheets or rusting fixings, and that nothing is likely to become a projectile in strong wind. If something looks unsafe, get it assessed before storm season. We build and repair sheds and structures designed for Top End conditions.
Tidy the yard and clear drainage
Trim branches that overhang the roof (leave anything near power lines to qualified professionals), clear drains and make sure water flows away from the house, not towards it. Pack away loose outdoor items before the first big storm.
Do not leave it to the last minute
Trades are often in high demand after major weather events, so tackling your list early is sensible. Make a note of anything you find and get a quote while the weather is still on your side.
