Fence Repairs in the Top End: Storm Damage, Timber and Colorbond

Wet-season storms, saturated ground, termites and relentless sun are tough on fences. Whether you are dealing with a leaning panel after a storm or a gate that will not latch, here is how to approach fence repairs in the Top End.

Common fence problems after storms

  • Leaning or fallen panels
  • Snapped or loose palings and rails
  • Rotted or termite-damaged posts
  • Gates that sag, drag or will not latch
  • Loose fixings and rusting brackets

Timber or Colorbond?

Timber looks great and is relatively easy to repair, but it is vulnerable to rot and termites unless the right timber and treatment are used and it is maintained. Colorbond steel is durable and low-maintenance, though it can dent, and cut edges and scratches can corrode over time, particularly near the coast. The best choice depends on your property, your budget and how much upkeep you are happy to do.

Repair or replace?

If the posts are sound, damaged panels, palings and rails can often be repaired for much less than a full replacement. If posts are rotting, leaning or showing termite damage, replacing them is usually the longer-lasting option, because a fence is only as strong as its posts.

Do not forget the gate

Sagging gates are usually caused by loose hinges, a weakened post or warped framing. Re-hanging, realigning or replacing hardware often fixes the problem without replacing the whole gate.

Dividing fences and pool barriers

If the fence is shared with a neighbour, talk to them early and check the current rules about dividing fences and cost-sharing through the NT Government or your local council. If the fence forms part of a pool barrier, specific safety requirements apply, so confirm the rules before changing it.
