Planning a Shed or Carport on a Rural Block Near Darwin

On a rural block at Howard Springs, Humpty Doo, Berry Springs or Virginia, a good shed or carport is one of the most useful additions you can make. It might protect vehicles and equipment, provide a workshop or storage, or become a backyard studio. Planning it properly before you build saves cost and headaches.

Start with the purpose

What will it be used for today and in five years? Vehicles, a boat, tools, machinery, stock feed or a workspace each need different sizes, door openings, power, lighting and ventilation.

Choose the site carefully

Think about vehicle access, how water moves across the block during heavy rain, ground conditions, shade, and the distance from the house, boundaries and trees. A low spot that is fine in the dry season can turn into a swamp in the wet.

Design for the Top End

Much of the Top End is a cyclonic wind region, so structures need to be designed, engineered and fixed accordingly. Ask for the wind rating and engineering that applies to your site, and make sure the footings, slab and fixings suit the structure. Galvanised or Colorbond steel and quality fixings help resist corrosion in our humid climate.

Check approvals early

Depending on size, height, location and use, a shed or carport may need building approval or planning consent. Check what applies with the NT Government and your local council (City of Darwin, City of Palmerston or Litchfield Council) before you commit, so there are no surprises part way through.

Plan power, lighting and extras

Electrical work must be completed by a licensed electrician. Think about roller doors, personal access doors, insulation, windows, benches and shelving so the building works from day one.
