Updating a Kitchen in Darwin Without a Full Rebuild: Cupboards, Rangehoods and Finishing Works
A full kitchen rebuild is a big job and a big cost. Plenty of Darwin kitchens only need a handful of changes to feel new: better cupboards, a swapped appliance, fresh walls and a floor that suits the Territory.
Options, from small to large
- Doors, handles and hinges: new fronts and hardware on cupboards that are still solid
- Replacement cupboards or benches: where the old ones have swollen, split or no longer fit your layout
- Appliance changes: a new rangehood, cooktop or oven often needs cupboards cut or reshaped to suit
- Wall finishes: patching, plastering, cornice and paint around the new work
- Flooring: hybrid or vinyl plank and tiles handle humidity better than many older floor types
Measure for the appliance first
Cooktops, rangehoods and ovens come in different sizes, and cupboards must be cut or modified to fit. Check the exact dimensions of the new appliance before any cupboard work begins. Swapping gas for electric or induction can also need electrical upgrades by a licensed electrician, so factor that in early.
Plan the order of work
- Confirm appliance sizes and positions
- Remove and modify cupboards or benches
- Repair walls and ceilings, then plaster, render and add cornice where needed
- Paint
- Fit doors, drawers and hardware, and finish the flooring
The exact order depends on your design. Ask your tradesperson to explain it so the floors and fresh paint are not damaged by later work.
Do not skip the finishing
Gaps, rough patches and unpainted edges are what make a good renovation look unfinished. Allow time and budget for plaster, render, cornice and paint around the new cupboards and appliances.
Choose finishes for the tropics
Moisture-resistant boards, quality hinges and runners and good ventilation above the cooktop all help a kitchen cope with humidity and cooking.
